Bugün Pazar (Nazim Hikmet, 1948)

Bugün Pazar
Bugün beni ilk defa güneşe çıkardılar.
Ve ben ömrümde ilk defa
gökyüzünün bu kadar benden uzak
bu kadar mavi
bu kadar geniş olduğuna şaşarak
kımıldanmadan durdum.
Sonra saygı ile toprağa oturdum.
Dayadım sırtımı beyaz duvara.
Bu anda ne düşmek dalgalara
bu anda ne kavga,
                        ne hürriyet, ne karım.
                                    Toprak, güneş ve ben...
                                    Bahtiyarım.

Today is Sunday.
Today for the first time they let me out in the sun.
And for the first time in my life
I was astonished at how far, how blue, how vast the visible sky was from me
and I stood still.
Later on, respectfully I sat down on the ground
I leaned my back against the white wall.
At this moment, no worry
at this moment, no struggle
no freedom
no wife.
Just the earth, the sun, and I...
I am happy.

The "UEA Poetry Anthology: Eight Poets" is introduced by prize-winning poets Lavinia Greenlaw and George Szirtes and brings together eight fresh and fine new voices from all around the world (Australia, Bermuda, Greece, Hong Kong, New Mexico, and the UK) -- some already being heard and heralded.

For the first time, this is a separate anthology from that of the prose in order to more directly promote these talented new voices. After being founded in 1992, the poetry course has seen the likes of Owen Sheers, Kathy Simmonds, Denise Riley, Andrew Motion, Ben Borek, Lavinia Greenlaw, Agnes Lehoczky, George Szirtes, Matthew Hollis, Adam Foulds, Hugo Williams, Daniel Kane, and Anthony Thwaite, all teach and/or study in its hallowed concrete halls.

Buy this if you want a good glimpse the future of new poetry in Britain and wider -- get to know the names before they are famous and impress your friends with prescient wisdom.

“No house-style, no ready-mades, simply original thinking, original writing from from an exciting set of individual voices.”
-- George Szirtes

"This group of poets have come from all over the world to work together at UEA. The interaction of such different voices has helped each to become more distinctive, more its own."
-- Lavinia Greenlaw

Poets included: Chris Astwood, Penny Boxall Krystalli Glyniadakis, James Midgley, Jenny Padgin, Marisa Silva-Dunbar, Jenny Wong, Sam Zifchak
